Sub Hunter Paul Tidwell, an American shipwreck salvager, points to photos of the Japanese submarine I-52, one of the most advanced submarines of World War II, during a press conference in Tokyo Friday.
It was sunk in the Atlantic on June 23, 1944, while en route to rendezvous with a German U-boat.
It was laden with two tons of gold and two tons of opium, likely for conversion into morphine painkillers.
Tidwell said he is planning an expedition within a year to raise the vessel.
