HACKENSACK - Volunteers and members of the Submarine Memorial Association, which maintains the New Jersey Naval Museum and USS Ling submarine, are the 2005 recipients of the Claire K. Tholl Award, the Bergen County Historic Preservation Advisory Board announced.
The award will be presented by Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and the Bergen County Board of Freeholders at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Church on the Green, 42 Court St.Basil Kio of Boonton, the association's president and a World War II submarine veteran, will be among the dignitaries accepting the award.
The association has maintained the USS Ling, launched in 1943 and commissioned in 1945, for more than 30 years.
The 312-foot Ling is credited with one wartime patrol, an exercise in the Panama Canal Zone, said Tom Coulson, a trustee of the association.
The award, established in 1997 in memory of Claire K. Tholl, is given by Bergen County in recognition of an individual's or organization's outstanding, long-time contribution to historic preservation in Bergen County.
